THE CHARACTER

Character Name: Asseylum Vers Allusia
Series: Aldnoah.Zero
Canon Point: Between Season 1 and 2, somewhere halfway while she is comatose.
Character Age: 16
Background: Here

Personality: From the very first scene of the very first episode, we are introduced to Asseylum's primary motivation: her desire to visit Earth and establish peaceful relations with the planet. As long as she has known Slaine, he had been quenching all of her curiosities about the blue planet that was the birthplace of all humanity. Even when dissuaded by her advisers, she remained steadfast in her objective to hold a peace meeting between Mars and Earth, seeing the state of affairs between the two planets and wanting to try and do something since no one else seemed to want to. She was accused of being foolhardy by Count Cruhteo, and even her handmaid suggested she not speak of Terrans (earthlings) as being the same race as the Versian Empire. Nonetheless, she went.

We can gather a few things about her character solely from this. She believes strongly in pacifism, highly dissatisfied by the conflict brewing between her empire and Earth. She wants to learn more and understand Earth and the people who call it home. However, she is also naive, unaware of the scheming counts and their plots to use her diplomatic gesture as a stage for her assassination and a cause for the war they so wanted with their scapegoat, Earth. She is also stubborn, and once she gets it in her mind to do something, it is tough to stop her.

Her naivety also extends to expecting that just because an armistice is in place, no rebel factions will make moves. She also mistakenly thinks that if the Vers empire only knows she survived, the hostilities will come to an immediate halt. Her naivete can mostly be blamed on being a princess, especially one severed from not only the harsh realities of the commoner's lives on her own planet but the planet that cradled humanity's origins as well. Vers doesn't have much culture in its own right, basing a few institutions on archaic social structures such as feudalism. As such, she was raised in an extreme cultural vacuum and has experienced precious little of what life outside a high-tech castle on Mars has to offer. However, she possesses a strong desire to know more.

This curiosity, particularly for Earth, inspires her wish to understand it rather than destroy and conquer it, which in turn and with her naturally sweet temperament encourages her to want to repair the strained relationship between planets. When war does hit, she wants to do anything in her power to stop the fighting, even joining forces with her would-be enemy to accomplish these goals. She was also quick to shoulder responsibility once she fully understood the ramifications of her visit to Earth and what role it played in sparking the war, which only fortified her resolve to stop it. And when Rayet attempted an actual assassination on her, she confessed what a fool she had been, how she was responsible for the loss of so many lives, including Rayet's father, and instead of focusing on how she almost killed her moved to apologize profusely for being the cause behind all of Rayet's tormented feelings, all at gunpoint. This reveals her tenacious selflessness and desire to do the right thing, as well as the character development she experienced through the war: learning from her childish mistakes and moving to take responsibility for the consequences of her actions. She also begins to learn that perhaps the Orbital Knights don't really care about her life or safety, only about war and the rewards winning it would bring them. It's pretty eye-opening for her, and while it deeply upsets her, she moves to take action quickly, knowing that thanks to her ability to shut Aldnoah drives down, there might be something she can do to cripple Count Saazbaum's attack and render their war machines inoperable.

Due to her royal upbringing, Asseylum is someone who should be the opposite of tolerant, and yet she extends an open hand and open mind to anyone she speaks with. While someone of her status should despise those from Earth she wants nothing more than to visit the blue planet and learn all about it. Her closest and dearest friend is Slaine Troyard, a Terran who, at her request, is able to stay at her castle after his father dies. Her compassion knows no bounds, for she even sneaks out of the castle to attend Slaine's father's funeral, much to the ire of her servants. A Princess of Vers shouldn't be associating herself with a lowly Terran. It looks bad, and so despite her best efforts to ensure Slaine is kept safe under Count Cruhteo's care, the depressing fate that awaits him when he leaves her side is out of her hands. She has no idea what he endures.

If she did, she would probably want to do something about it. Asseylum is not someone who stands by idly when something needs to be done. For instance, in the second season, she saved Lemrina's life at the risk of her own without a second thought. Once she makes a decision she sticks by it, steadfast and unwavering. Perhaps one of the most impacting decisions she makes is at the end of the series, when she takes matters into her own hands and divests Slaine of his newfound political power by announcing her marriage to Count Cruhteo's son. By doing so, she gains the backing of the counts who followed him and makes the coup Slaine had been planning all for naught. It's not a marriage of love by any means: it's politics, and it's a game she's willing to play and sacrifice herself for in return for stopping a war that nearly ends with Earth being nuked out of existence. Even after all of this and the threat Slaine had posed to the very planet he came from, she still begs Inaho to save him from being executed. This just goes to show how far she's willing to forgive the transgressions of someone, especially when she knows deep down that their intentions and heart were in the right place.

In summary, Asseylum is a girl with a kind, peace-loving heart but an iron will, especially when it comes to doing what's right and protecting not only those dear to her, but as many lives as she can possibly save. She is, after all, the princess of an empire, raised to understand that caring for her people is her highest priority. She takes the weight of that responsibility very seriously, and is even willing to sacrifice her happiness, well-being, or even her life to that end. She believes everyone has the capacity to understand one another despite their differences and is not stingy with forgiveness.

Powers/Abilities:

- The power of Aldnoah. She's able to activate, deactivate, and control technology that is powered by Aldnoah drives.
- The power of Aldnoah also grants her the ability to disguise herself as though she's playing some kind of insta-dollmaker in real life. It's a type of temporary holographic effect. She's able to change her outward appearance (clothing, hair, etc.) even if her face stays the same. She's also able to take on the appearance of others. It can be assumed that like Lemrina, her half-sister with the same power as her, she can alter her appearance to look like someone else entirely.
-She has some hand-to-hand combat abilities as demonstrated in episode 2, when she grabs Inaho and flips him over onto the ground, pinning him into submission as she politely asks him for information. My speculation is that she was taught some fundamentals from a young age so that she may defend herself at close quarters when the necessity arises.

Power Nerfs (if applicable):

Since her abilities are mostly dependent on Aldnoah technology being present, there shouldn't be a need to nerf her. If being able to 'shapeshift' is too game-breaking, then her ability to glamour can be restricted to hair and clothing changes. Her face, however, will stay the same.

Inventory: NOTHING!!!

Incentives:

Incentives won't be necessary; Asseylum is willing to cooperate with the Natha for free. However, if prompted, she will be full of regrets from the war she left behind, and ask that there be no more wars. Because that's MOST LIKELY (I am assuming) not an incentive the Natha can grant, she will probably be prompted to ask for something else. Heart still clouded by the war, she will then mull over her specific regret that she didn't have the ability to do more in that situation, and so, her incentive would then be changed to the power to make a difference, and the guarantee of the health and safety of her people and the Terrans.
